More Than a Massage: Experiencing Traditional Khmer Healing in Cambodia

We’ve had many massages in Cambodia before — relaxing, comfortable, and familiar.
This time, we were looking for something different.

In this episode, we share our experience with traditional Khmer healing at Sra Thnam House in Siem Reap. This was not a spa treatment, and not something we expected to affect us emotionally. It was a deeply physical and personal experience rooted in intention, trust, and tradition.

After a long introduction explaining what happened during our first visit — which we didn’t film — we return to Sratnam to experience it again, this time with cameras. We meet Kim, the owner, learn about the process, fill out a detailed questionnaire, and make a conscious choice about how deep we want to go.

What followed was intense. Physically painful, yes — but also unexpectedly emotional. The massage released things we didn’t know we were holding onto. Afterwards, we moved into a quiet space to rest, bathe in herbs, and slowly come back into balance. Even Espresso, the resident dog, plays a role in offering calm and comfort during the process.

To close the experience, Kim sent us for a traditional water blessing at a local temple, a gentle and grounding way to end something that was both challenging and meaningful.

This video is about slowing down while traveling. About trusting local traditions. And about learning through experience — not just through what we see, but through what we feel.

This is not for everyone. But for us, it became one of the most memorable experiences we’ve had in Cambodia. A big thank you goes to Kim for teaching us about Khmer healing in such a thoughtful way.
