The UN confirmed that Israeli entities including the Israeli army have been added to the United Nations blacklist for sexual violence in conflict zones in a briefing on Friday.
Middle East Eye has previously reported on the extensive sexual abuse suffered by Palestinians in Israeli prisons, with witness testimonies describing beatings, rape, including through the use of objects, and even in some cases by trained dogs.
The news was first reported by the Jerusalem Post on Thursday with the Israeli ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, saying the decision was “political” and “detached from the facts and from reality”. The Jerusalem Post also reported that Israel has frozen relations with the office of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The Israeli Prison Service is included in the list, with other entities being monitored for possible future inclusion.
